San Francisco has some incredible playgrounds — way more than most people realize. After spending years dragging my toddler (and now preschooler) to every playground in the city, I've developed some strong opinions. Here are my 15 favorites, ranked.

The Top Tier

1. Presidio Tunnel Tops — The Outpost This is the crown jewel. Built on top of the Presidio tunnels with Golden Gate Bridge views, the Outpost play area lets kids build forts with logs, climb boulders, and explore nature-inspired play structures. It doesn't feel like a "playground" — it feels like an adventure. Bring layers, it gets windy.

2. Koret Playground, Golden Gate Park The OG. Recently renovated with an incredible climbing structure, multiple slides (including the famous concrete ones — bring cardboard!), and the carousel nearby. Pair it with the Cal Academy or de Young for a full GGP day.

3. Dolores Park Playground The toddler area is fenced (hallelujah), the big kid structure is challenging enough to keep 8-year-olds interested, and you're steps from the best ice cream and tacos in the Mission.

The Hidden Gems

4. Julius Kahn Playground, Presidio Shaded by eucalyptus trees and almost never crowded. The huge grass field next to the playground is perfect for picnics, kite flying, or just letting your kid sprint in circles.

5. Mountain Lake Park, Richmond District The playground is solid but the real draw is the lake with turtles and ducks. Bring some peas (not bread!) and watch your toddler lose their mind with excitement.

6. Randall Museum Playground, Corona Heights After checking out the free museum (live animals! Model trains!), let the kids play on the playground with panoramic city views. One of the best-kept secrets in SF.

Worth the Trip

7. Joe DiMaggio Playground, North Beach Renovated turf field + views of Coit Tower + proximity to Liguria Bakery focaccia = perfection.

8. Helen Diller Playground, Civic Center Modern design with great water features on warm days. The separated toddler area gives parents peace of mind. Hit it up during the farmers market for bonus points.

9. Yerba Buena Gardens The built-in hill slides are unique and the sand area is huge. Combine with the Children's Creativity Museum next door for a full SOMA day.

10-15. Honorable Mentions South Park (SoMa's tiny gem), Huntington Park (Nob Hill views), Alta Plaza (Pacific Heights stair workout + playground), Cabrillo Playground (Richmond District local favorite), Glen Canyon Park (nature play), and Sue Bierman Park (Embarcadero, great for toddlers).

Pro Tips

  • Bring layers. SF microclimates mean it can be 70° in the Mission and 52° at Ocean Beach.
  • Bring cardboard for concrete slides (Koret, Seward Street).
  • Go early on weekends — popular playgrounds get packed by 11 AM.
  • Pack snacks. Always. More than you think you need.
  • Know a playground I missed? Email me — I'm always looking for new spots to explore with my crew.
