Rainy Day Activities for Kids in SF
When Karl the Fog rolls in (or actual rain, in winter), here's where to take the kids so everyone stays sane.
Let's be honest: San Francisco weather is unpredictable. One minute it's sunny in the Mission, the next minute the Sunset is drowning in fog. And during winter? Actual rain. Here's your rainy day survival guide for keeping kids entertained indoors.
Museums That Are Actually Fun
Exploratorium — The gold standard. Over 650 interactive exhibits where kids can touch everything. The water exhibits are mesmerizing (bring a change of clothes). The Tactile Dome — a pitch-black maze you navigate by touch — is unforgettable for kids 7+. Buy tickets online.
California Academy of Sciences — The four-story indoor rainforest is warm, humid, and full of butterflies. The aquarium has a living coral reef. The planetarium shows are perfect for a rainy afternoon. Pro tip: free quarterly days for SF residents.
Children's Creativity Museum — Small but mighty. Kids make their own claymation movies, compose music, and design stuff. Right next to Yerba Buena Gardens (which has indoor attractions too).
Randall Museum — Free! Live hawks, owls, and snakes. Woodworking and ceramics studios. Model train room (open select Saturdays). A total hidden gem.
Active Indoor Fun
House of Air — Trampoline park in a converted Presidio airplane hangar. Wall-to-wall trampolines, foam pits, ninja warrior course. Your kids will sleep SO well after this. Book online.
Urban Putt — Indoor mini golf where every hole is a different art installation. Creative, weird, and wonderful. Family-friendly during the day (21+ at night).
Peek-A-Boo Factory — If you have a baby or toddler, this Marina play space is a lifesaver. Soft play, ball pits, sensory stations. Clean and well-maintained.
Creative Stuff
Color Me Mine — Paint your own pottery. Chill, creative, works for ages 3-103. Pieces get fired in the kiln and you pick them up a week later.
Circus Center — Your kid can learn trapeze. I repeat: YOUR KID CAN LEARN TRAPEZE. Ages 6+ for intro classes. This is peak San Francisco.
The Secret Weapons
Don't sleep on these: SF Public Library branches (story times are free and frequent), Pottery Barn Kids (free in-store events), and honestly? A trip to the Ferry Building to eat your way through the food stalls works great too.
