Kid-Friendly Restaurants: Mission District Edition

The Mission has the best food in SF — and plenty of spots that actually welcome kids with open arms (and highchairs).

The Mission District is the best food neighborhood in San Francisco — fight me on this. And despite its reputation as a hip, adults-only dining scene, there are plenty of spots that genuinely welcome families. Here's where to eat with kids in the Mission.

The Classics

El Farolito — It's loud, it's bustling, nobody will notice your screaming toddler. The super burrito is the size of your forearm and costs less than a San Francisco parking ticket. Cash only. Open late (2:30 AM on weekends) which is clutch after evening events.

La Taqueria — Controversial opinion: the burritos here (no rice, just meat and beans) are the best in the city. Small space but fast turnover. The quesadilla suiza is perfect for kids. James Beard Award winner — yes, a taqueria won a James Beard Award.

Tartine Manufactory — The upscale option. Beautiful space, incredible pastries, and enough room to park a double stroller. The morning bun is mandatory. Weekend brunch gets crowded — go at opening.

The Underrated Picks

Lolo — Elevated Mexican with a great outdoor patio. The margs are strong (you'll need them) and the street corn is incredible. Kids love the quesadillas. Reservations recommended.

Dinosaurs — Vietnamese sandwiches (banh mi) that are cheap, fast, and delicious. Counter service = no pressure with kids. The #1 combo is legendary. Cash only (sensing a Mission theme?).

Media Noche — Cuban sandwiches and tropical vibes. The pressed Cubano is perfect, the batidos (milkshakes) are a kid crowd-pleaser, and the colorful interior is fun.

For Special Occasions

Lazy Bear — OK, this is NOT kid-friendly. But if you can get a babysitter, it's one of the best restaurants in the country. Just putting it here because you deserve a night out.

Tips for Dining with Kids in the Mission

  • Go early. Most Mission restaurants don't take reservations and get packed after 6:30 PM.
  • Embrace taquerias. They're fast, cheap, and nobody cares if your kid drops rice on the floor.
  • Dolores Park after. End any Mission meal with a run around the playground. Built-in dessert: paletas from the street vendors.
  • Parking is brutal. Take BART to 24th or 16th Street station, or just give up and take a rideshare.
  • The Mission is an evolving neighborhood and restaurants come and go. I update this list regularly — last updated March 2026.
