A Sunday on Clement Street with Kids

Start with one shopping bag and a small plan: a Sunday market visit, a bookstore browse, and outdoor play if everyone still has energy. This Inner Richmond outing can finish after one stop or stretch into a half-day. The visit lengths below are our planning suggestions, not scheduled activities.

1. Give the market a simple mission

Clement Street Farmers Market runs Sundays, 9 AM–2 PM, rain or shine. The operator lists its location as 244 Clement Street. Start here while the stalls are open, especially if you are leaving home late in the morning.

Let a child choose one fruit, find three colors of vegetables, or help decide what to cook later. Set a purchase budget before browsing. Vendors change, so choose food after seeing what is available; do not promise a specific prepared dish or free samples.

Many vendors take cards, and the market lists an on-site ATM. The AIM information booth can hold bulk purchases while you shop. Pack manageable bags if you intend to walk onward. Pets are not allowed at the market.

2. Browse Green Apple after 10 AM

Green Apple Books is at 506 Clement Street and lists 10 AM–9 PM opening hours. A 9 AM market start therefore leaves time to shop before the bookstore opens. This plan uses the Clement Street shop; Green Apple’s other branches have different addresses and events.

Make the visit child-sized. Ask each child to choose one cover to investigate, read a page together where appropriate, and decide whether to buy or add the title to a library list. An ordinary browse is different from a scheduled author event or storytime; check the branch calendar before promising a performance. The store also links to branch-specific accessibility details.

3. Keep Mountain Lake Park optional

For a longer outing, continue to Mountain Lake Park, whose city-listed address is 1 11th Avenue. This is an additional neighborhood walk with street crossings, not a playground directly beside the market. Check your route and the family’s energy before committing.

The park has a sand-floor playground with slides, swings, and a climbing structure, plus picnic areas and an accessible restroom. Bring a picnic if you want the outdoor break to work without another purchase. Restrooms open at 8 AM and close at 8 PM in spring/summer or 5:30 PM in fall/winter; the park itself stays open later. Watch wildlife from a distance and leave birds unfed.

Choose a shorter version

• One hour: shop at the market and head home with an ingredient for lunch.
• About two hours: market, then a short bookstore visit, with travel time added.
• A longer morning: add the park and a picnic. Treat the walk as part of the outing.
• Rainy Sunday: the market operates in rain, but you can shorten shopping and skip outdoor play.
